Kilimanjaro National Park in July

Great time to visit

July is one of the best months to visit Kilimanjaro National Park.

All Months

Kilimanjaro has two prime climbing seasons, and timing your trip right dramatically improves your chances of success. January through March offers the clearest skies and warmest temperatures, making it ideal for photography. The mountain sees fewer crowds during these months, especially in February. June through October is peak season for good reason—dry weather and stable conditions, though expect more traffic on popular routes like Machame. Here's the thing about weather on Kilimanjaro: it's unpredictable regardless of season. You might get perfect blue skies or find yourself climbing through clouds and rain. But statistically, your best bet for clear summit views is late January or early February. Avoid April and May completely—this is the long rainy season when trails turn muddy and dangerous. November can work, but it's the short rainy season with afternoon thunderstorms. December is hit or miss, with Christmas and New Year bringing crowds and higher prices. Temperature-wise, expect tropical heat at the base (80°F+) dropping to arctic conditions at the summit (-10°F or lower with wind chill). The temperature drops roughly 3.5°F for every 1,000 feet you climb. Full moon climbs are popular since the extra light helps during summit night, but book early—these dates fill up fast. If you're flexible with dates, shoulder seasons like late March or early June offer better prices and fewer crowds while still maintaining decent weather odds.
