Kenai Fjords in September

Great time to visit

September is one of the best months to visit Kenai Fjords.

All Months

May through September is your window, with July and August being peak season. But here's the insider scoop — late May and early June offer the best wildlife viewing. Migrating whales are more active, and you'll dodge the cruise ship crowds. July brings wildflowers and the warmest weather, but also the most people. August can be rainy but offers excellent berry picking — wild blueberries and salmonberries grow everywhere. September is underrated. Fewer crowds, fall colors, and often clearer skies for glacier viewing. The trade-off? Some tour operators reduce schedules, and weather becomes less predictable. Winter visits are possible but require serious planning. The park transforms into a cross-country skiing and snowshoeing playground, but services shut down and you'll need winter camping experience.
