York in December
Not the best time
December transforms York into a Christmas card with markets filling Parliament Street and fairy lights strung across The Shambles. Cold and crowded, but undeniably magical for the holidays.
Weather
December brings winter weather in earnest with cold, damp days and occasional frost. Snow is possible but not guaranteed - more likely you'll get persistent drizzle. The short days mean limited daylight for outdoor exploring.

All Months
April through September gives you the best shot at decent weather and long daylight hours. York in summer stays light until 9pm, perfect for evening walks along the city walls.
May and September hit the sweet spot — fewer crowds than peak summer but still warm enough for outdoor dining. The Minster gardens look spectacular in late spring, and September brings the Food & Drink Festival.
July and August bring families and tour groups. The Shambles gets properly rammed, and restaurant bookings become essential. But the weather's most reliable, and all the attractions run full programs.
Winter has its charm if you can handle the cold. The Christmas markets transform the city center, and you'll have the Minster practically to yourself. Just pack layers — York gets properly bitter when the wind whips across the Yorkshire Dales.
