Wyoming in December

Summer owns Wyoming. June through September brings wildflowers, accessible trails, and 70-degree days perfect for hiking. But everyone knows this — expect crowds at Yellowstone and premium prices in Jackson. July and August see peak visitor numbers, with Old Faithful surrounded by tour buses and families. September offers the sweet spot: warm days, cool nights, and elk bugling season. The aspens turn gold, creating natural cathedrals in the Tetons. Spring arrives late and leaves early. May still brings snow to high elevations, though lower areas start greening up. It's muddy season — many trails remain closed, and weather swings wildly. Winter transforms Wyoming into something magical and brutal. Jackson Hole Ski Resort gets 400+ inches annually, creating powder paradise. But temperatures drop to -20°F, and many park roads close completely. Only the hardcore visit Yellowstone in winter, but those who do see the park at its most primal — wolves hunting in snow-covered valleys, bison huddled around hot springs.
