Wine Country in December

Not the best time

December isn't ideal for Wine Country. Consider a different month.

All Months

Late spring through early summer hits the sweet spot — April through June brings perfect weather without the crush season crowds. Vineyards are lush and green, wildflowers bloom along the roadsides, and you can actually get same-day reservations at decent restaurants. Fall is harvest season, which sounds romantic until you realize it means tour buses everywhere and hotel rates that spike 40%. September and October offer warm days and cool nights, plus you might catch actual grape picking in action. But book accommodations months ahead. Winter brings rain and bare vines, but also the best deals and smallest crowds. January through March, many wineries offer discounted tastings, and restaurants run special prix fixe menus. Just pack layers — it can be 45°F and drizzling in the morning, then 70°F and sunny by afternoon. Avoid summer weekends if possible. July and August bring temperatures over 90°F, plus every San Francisco resident seems to migrate here. If you must visit then, start your tastings early and take a long lunch break during the heat of the day.
