Western North Dakota in March
Good time to visit
March is a reasonable time to visit Western North Dakota.
All Months
May through September offers the sweet spot for Western North Dakota travel. Temperatures hit the 70s and 80s, perfect for hiking the Badlands trails and driving the scenic loop roads. July brings peak tourist season to Medora – expect crowds at Theodore Roosevelt National Park and higher hotel rates. But it's also when everything operates at full capacity, including the famous Medora Musical outdoor show. September might be ideal: warm days, cool nights, fewer crowds, and spectacular fall colors along the Little Missouri River. The cottonwoods turn brilliant yellow against red rock formations. Winter transforms the region into a harsh but beautiful landscape. Temperatures drop below zero for weeks, and blizzards shut down highways without warning. Only visit December through March if you're comfortable with extreme cold and have winter driving experience. Spring comes late – April still brings snow and mud, making backcountry roads impassable. October works for hardy visitors who don't mind unpredictable weather and some closed attractions.
