Umbria in March

Good time to visit

March is a reasonable time to visit Umbria.

All Months

April through June delivers Umbria at its most beautiful. Wildflowers carpet hillsides, temperatures hover in the comfortable 20s Celsius, and restaurant terraces reopen after winter hibernation. This is truffle season too – both black and the prized white varieties from Norcia. September and October might be even better. Harvest season brings grape festivals to every wine town, while autumn light turns those rolling hills golden. Temperatures stay warm enough for outdoor dining, but summer crowds have moved on. Book accommodations early though – locals know this is the sweet spot. Summer works if you can handle the heat. July and August see temperatures pushing 35°C, but evenings cool down enough for comfortable exploring. Many restaurants close for vacation in August, so research ahead. The upside? Long daylight hours and outdoor concerts in places like Spoleto's famous festival. Winter Umbria has its own magic, especially around Christmas when towns light up medieval squares. But many smaller restaurants and attractions close, and those hilltop roads get treacherous when it rains. Stick to larger towns like Perugia and Orvieto if visiting between November and March.
