Transfăgărășan in May

Good time to visit

May is a reasonable time to visit Transfăgărășan.

All Months

July and August offer the most reliable weather, but also the biggest crowds. The road stays busy from 10 AM to 6 PM during peak summer, with convoys of tour buses making passing difficult on narrow sections. September is the sweet spot. Cooler temperatures mean fewer crowds, but the road remains fully open. Fall colors peak in late September around Bâlea Lake, creating some of the year's best photography conditions. June can be hit-or-miss. The road officially reopens, but snow patches linger at higher elevations. Morning temperatures can drop below freezing at Bâlea Lake even in mid-June. Avoid weekends in July and August unless you enjoy traffic jams at 2,000 meters. Romanian families flock to the mountains during summer holidays, and the single-lane sections create bottlenecks. Weekday drives take half the time.
