The Berkshires in October

Great time to visit

October is one of the best months to visit The Berkshires.

All Months

Summer owns the Berkshires. Tanglewood's season runs July through early September, bringing crowds and premium prices. But the weather's perfect - warm days, cool nights, minimal humidity. Book accommodations months ahead. Fall foliage peaks mid-October, creating traffic jams on scenic routes. The colors are spectacular, but so are the crowds. Leaf-peeping season lasts about three weeks. Hotels jack up rates and impose minimum stays. Late spring through early summer (May-June) offers the sweet spot. Flowers bloom, hiking trails dry out, and prices stay reasonable. Some attractions have limited hours, but you'll have towns mostly to yourself. Winter brings cross-country skiing and cozy inn fireplaces. Many restaurants close or reduce hours. Jiminy Peak offers decent downhill skiing, but Vermont's mountains are better. January temperatures hover around 25°F. Early fall (September) gives you warm weather without peak foliage crowds. Perfect for hiking, outdoor concerts, and farmers markets. This might be the actual best time to visit.
