Texas Hill Country in July
Not the best time
July isn't ideal for Texas Hill Country. Consider a different month.
All Months
March through May is peak season, and for good reason. The wildflowers bloom from late March through early May, with bluebonnets typically hitting their stride in early April. But everyone knows this, so expect crowds and higher prices. Here's a local secret: October and November offer perfect weather with smaller crowds and fall colors that rival New England. Temperatures hover in the 70s and 80s, perfect for wine tasting and hiking. Summer gets brutal – we're talking 100-plus degrees from June through September, though the spring-fed rivers provide relief. Winter surprises people. January and February can hit freezing, and those limestone hills get slick when it rains. But you'll have the place mostly to yourself, and many wineries offer cozy fireplaces and winter wine specials. If you're dead set on wildflower season, book accommodations six months ahead and visit midweek if possible. The flowers don't care what day it is, but your wallet and sanity will thank you for avoiding weekend crowds.
