Switzerland in October
Not the best time
October isn't ideal for Switzerland. Consider a different month.
All Months
Summer brings hiking weather and 20-hour daylight, but also crowds that turn mountain railways into cattle cars. June through September offers the most reliable weather for outdoor adventures, with wildflowers blooming across alpine meadows in July. Winter transforms the country into a snow globe, with world-class skiing from December through March. But here's the catch — Christmas and New Year's see prices double and reservations disappear months ahead. Spring arrives late at altitude; April still means snow above 5,000 feet, though valleys start turning green. Fall delivers golden larches and smaller crowds, making September and October ideal for photography. Weather changes fast in the mountains — pack layers even in summer, because that sunny morning in Grindelwald can turn into afternoon snow on Jungfraujoch. Check mountain railway schedules before traveling; many close for maintenance in November.
