Sweden in August
Great time to visit
August is one of the best months to visit Sweden.
All Months
May through September gives you the best weather and longest days, but each month serves different purposes. June brings white nights and lupins blooming across Lapland — perfect for hiking without headlamps. July and August mean peak tourist season and peak prices, but also midnight sun above the Arctic Circle and Stockholm's archipelago at its most beautiful. September offers fewer crowds and spectacular fall colors, especially in Lapland where the leaves turn golden in early September. But here's the thing about Swedish seasons: winter isn't just something to endure. December through March brings northern lights, dog sledding, and the chance to stay in an actual ice hotel. The Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi rebuilds every October with new artists creating ice sculptures in every room. Temperatures drop to -40°C in Lapland, but modern gear and heated buildings make it manageable. Spring (April-May) can be muddy and unpredictable — locals call it 'fifth season' for good reason. If you're chasing aurora, visit between October and March when nights are longest.
