Sri Lanka in September

Not the best time

September isn't ideal for Sri Lanka. Consider a different month.

All Months

Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons, which sounds complicated but actually works in your favor. The west and south coasts get hit by the southwest monsoon from May to September. The east coast gets the northeast monsoon from October to January. This means somewhere on the island always has good weather. December through April is peak season for the cultural triangle and south coast beaches. Temperatures hover around 85°F with minimal rain. But you'll pay premium prices and fight crowds at Sigiriya. May through September flips the script. The east coast around Trincomalee and Arugam Bay has perfect beach weather while everyone else deals with rain. Surfing season in Arugam Bay runs April through October. The hill country around Ella and Kandy stays relatively dry year-round, though mornings can be misty. Tea picking season runs year-round, but the best weather for hiking is December through March. Avoid traveling during Sinhala and Tamil New Year in mid-April - everything shuts down for a week, including restaurants and transport.
