Southern Vietnam in May
Not the best time
May isn't ideal for Southern Vietnam. Consider a different month.
All Months
November through April delivers Southern Vietnam's best weather. Temperatures hover around 25-30°C with minimal rain and lower humidity. This is peak season – hotel prices jump 40-50% and popular restaurants get crowded.
December and January see the most comfortable conditions. Morning coffee on a Saigon rooftop actually feels pleasant instead of sweltering. The Mekong Delta's floating markets operate smoothly without weather disruptions.
May through October brings monsoon season. Daily afternoon downpours flood streets within minutes, and humidity makes walking outdoors feel like a sauna. But here's the upside – accommodation costs plummet, tourist crowds thin out, and the countryside turns lush green.
Tet (Vietnamese New Year) usually falls in late January or February. The city empties as locals return to their home villages, but many restaurants and attractions close for a week. Book accommodation well in advance if you're visiting during Tet.
The Mekong Delta's fruit season peaks from May to August despite the rain. Mango, rambutan, and dragon fruit reach perfect ripeness, and floating markets overflow with produce.
