South Island in April

Good time to visit

April is a reasonable time to visit South Island.

All Months

December through March delivers South Island's summer glory. Temperatures reach 20-25°C, hiking trails open fully, and daylight stretches until 9 PM. But expect crowds at Milford Sound and premium accommodation prices in Queenstown. September through November brings spring magic without summer crowds. Lupins bloom purple along Lake Tekapo shores, and adventure operators offer shoulder-season discounts. Weather can be unpredictable – pack layers. Winter (June-August) transforms South Island into a different destination. Queenstown's ski fields buzz with energy, and The Remarkables provide world-class powder. But many hiking trails close, and West Coast weather turns brutal. April and May offer autumn's golden light and harvest season in Central Otago. Vineyard tours include harvest participation, and accommodation prices drop significantly. Days grow shorter but remain pleasant for outdoor activities. Avoid July unless you're skiing – it's South Island's wettest, coldest month. Franz Josef receives 3000mm annual rainfall, mostly concentrated in winter months. Milford Sound's new visitor allocation system requires advance booking regardless of season. Book 2-3 months ahead for summer visits, 4-6 weeks for winter.
