South Dakota in January

Not the best time

January isn't ideal for South Dakota. Consider a different month.

All Months

May through September gives you the best weather, but each month has its personality. May brings wildflowers to the prairie and fewer crowds, though some higher elevation attractions might still be closed. June and July are peak season for good reason—everything's open, the weather's warm, and the days stretch until 9 PM. But you'll share Mount Rushmore with thousands of other visitors and pay premium prices for hotels. August brings the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, transforming the Black Hills into biker central for one week. Unless you're riding with them, avoid the area from August 2-11, 2026—hotel rates triple and traffic crawls. September might be the sweet spot. Kids are back in school, temperatures are comfortable for hiking, and the cottonwoods start turning gold in the canyons. Plus, you can actually get a dinner reservation in Deadwood. Winter transforms the Black Hills into a different world entirely. Skiing at Terry Peak, ice climbing in Spearfish Canyon, and a much quieter Mount Rushmore. Just pack serious winter gear—temperatures can drop to -20°F.
