June through October gives you the best weather and access, but each month brings different rewards. June means wildflowers in the high country, especially around Crested Butte where entire meadows turn purple with lupine. But snow lingers on high passes - Independence Pass might not open until July. Stream crossings run high with snowmelt. July and August deliver classic Colorado summer: 70s in the valleys, 50s at treeline, and afternoon thunderstorms that clear by evening. This is peak hiking season for 14ers - start before dawn to avoid lightning. Crested Butte's wildflower festival happens in mid-July. September brings aspen gold and crisp mornings perfect for hiking. Crowds thin out after Labor Day, but weather stays stable through the month. Great Sand Dunes feels pleasant instead of scorching. October can surprise you with 70-degree days or dump a foot of snow without warning. But when it's good, it's spectacular - golden aspens against fresh snow on the peaks. Many high-altitude roads close by Halloween. Winter transforms the region into a different place entirely. Crested Butte becomes a ski destination, while lower elevations like Pagosa Springs offer hot springs relief from the cold.
