August sees the most visitors, especially around the Birdsville Races weekend, so expect company on popular tracks. But here's the thing about desert weather — it changes fast. September starts heating up but remains manageable for experienced desert travelers. Avoid December through March completely unless you enjoy heat stroke and vehicle breakdowns in 45°C shade.
