Shodoshima in January
Good time to visit
January is a reasonable time to visit Shodoshima.
All Months
March through May brings perfect weather and blooming olive trees, but also the biggest crowds during the Setouchi Triennale art festival (held every three years). September to November offers warm days and fewer tourists — olive harvest season means you can join picking tours at Shodoshima Olive Park for ¥2,000. The island's Mediterranean climate keeps things pleasant even in winter, though some outdoor art installations close. Summer gets humid and sticky, typical for this part of Japan. If you're coming for the art, check the festival schedule first. The big installations only appear during Triennale years, but permanent pieces stay year-round.
