Spring (March-May) brings cherry blossoms but also crowds and higher accommodation prices. Temple 45, Iwaya-ji, becomes particularly busy during sakura season. Fall (September-November) offers ideal weather with comfortable temperatures and autumn colors painting mountain temples. Avoid July-August's oppressive heat and humidity that makes walking dangerous. Winter walking requires serious preparation - snow closes some mountain paths and several temple lodgings shut down. November through early December provides perfect conditions: cool mornings, warm afternoons, and fewer pilgrims. Temple festivals occur year-round but Awa Odori dance festival in Tokushima (mid-August) creates accommodation shortages. Start early in the day regardless of season - temples close their stamp offices around 5 PM and some mountain paths become treacherous after dark.
