Shenandoah Valley in October
Great time to visit
October is one of the best months to visit Shenandoah Valley.
All Months
October rules the valley. Leaves peak around October 15th, though elevation matters — higher elevations turn first. Skyline Drive becomes a parking lot on peak weekends, so visit midweek if possible. Temperatures hover around 70 degrees during the day, perfect for hiking.
Spring arrives in April with wildflowers carpeting the forest floor. Dogwoods bloom first, followed by redbuds that paint the mountains pink. May brings perfect weather — 75 degrees and low humidity — but also graduation crowds at nearby universities.
Summer gets hot and humid, especially in July. But here's the thing: the mountains stay 10 degrees cooler than the valley floor. Shenandoah National Park's waterfalls run strongest after spring rains, making summer hikes worthwhile despite the heat.
Winter brings bare trees and clear mountain views. Snow falls maybe six times per year, usually melting within days. Many attractions close or reduce hours, but you'll have Skyline Drive mostly to yourself. Luray Caverns stays a constant 54 degrees year-round — perfect for cold days.
