Saxon Switzerland in February

Not the best time

February isn't ideal for Saxon Switzerland. Consider a different month.

All Months

May through September offers the sweet spot for Saxon Switzerland adventures. Spring brings wildflowers and flowing waterfalls, while summer provides the longest days for epic hikes. But here's what the guidebooks won't tell you — autumn might be the secret season. September and October paint the beech forests in brilliant oranges and reds. The crowds thin out after German school holidays end, and crisp mornings give way to perfect hiking temperatures. Just pack layers — weather can shift quickly in these valleys. Winter transforms Saxon Switzerland into a different planet. Snow clings to the sandstone pinnacles, creating scenes worthy of Narnia. Many trails become impassable, but the main routes to Bastei stay open. Cross-country skiing replaces hiking as the activity of choice. Climbers have their own calendar. Sandstone stays dry longer than limestone, making spring and fall prime seasons. Summer can be too hot for technical routes, especially on south-facing walls that bake in afternoon sun. Avoid major German holidays if possible. Easter weekend and October 3rd (German Unity Day) turn popular trails into human traffic jams. Locals joke that you can walk from Dresden to Prague on the heads of tourists during these peak times.
