Salar de Uyuni in December

Great time to visit

December is one of the best months to visit Salar de Uyuni.

All Months

The salt flat offers two completely different experiences depending on when you visit. Dry season (June through August) reveals the classic white desert landscape with perfect geometric patterns and those iconic cactus islands like Incahuasi. Temperatures are more manageable, though nights still freeze. Mirror season runs December through March when rain creates a thin water layer across the salt. This is when you get those mind-bending reflection photos that look like you're walking on clouds. But weather is unpredictable — too much rain makes parts inaccessible, too little and you won't get the mirror effect. Here's what tour operators won't tell you: January and February offer the most reliable mirror conditions, but they're also the wettest months. March gives you the best compromise — some mirror areas with more predictable weather. Avoid the shoulder seasons of April-May and September-November. You'll get neither the full white desert experience nor reliable mirrors, just muddy, partially flooded salt with mediocre photo opportunities. The weather is also most unpredictable during these months.
