Route 66 in July
Good time to visit
July is a reasonable time to visit Route 66.
All Months
Spring and fall give you the best weather across all eight states, but Route 66 spans enough climate zones that perfect timing is impossible. April through June works well—you'll hit wildflower season in Texas and avoid the brutal summer heat in Arizona and California. September and October bring cooler desert temperatures and fall colors in the Ozarks. Summer means 110+ degrees in the Mojave Desert and afternoon thunderstorms in New Mexico. But summer also means longer days and all the roadside attractions stay open. Winter can work for the southern portions, but you risk snow and ice in Illinois, Missouri, and northern Arizona. Flagstaff sits at 7,000 feet and gets real winter weather. The Painted Desert looks incredible under snow, but some services shut down. Here's what really matters: avoid major holidays when every family in America decides to take a road trip. Memorial Day weekend turns the Mother Road into a parking lot. Same with Labor Day. Spring break brings college kids, but they stick to the party destinations. If you can swing it, go in late September or early October. The weather's perfect, summer crowds are gone, and you get that melancholy end-of-season vibe that matches Route 66's faded glory perfectly.
