Riviera Maya in December
Great time to visit
December is one of the best months to visit Riviera Maya.
All Months
November through April offers the sweet spot — dry weather, lower humidity, and temperatures in the 80s during the day, 70s at night. This is peak season, so expect crowds and higher prices, but the weather is genuinely perfect.
December and January are the busiest months, when North Americans flee winter weather. Book accommodations well in advance during this period, especially around Christmas and New Year's when prices double.
May through October brings heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms, but also fewer crowds and better deals. The rain usually comes in short, intense bursts rather than all-day drizzles. Swimming in cenotes feels amazing when it's 95 degrees outside.
Hurricane season runs June through November, with September and October being the highest-risk months. Most storms miss the area, but when they don't, they can shut down the region for days.
Avoid Spring Break (March-April) unless you're into that scene. Playa del Carmen and Tulum turn into party central, with prices to match. The crowds can make popular cenotes and ruins genuinely unpleasant to visit.
Summer diving conditions are actually excellent — water temperatures hit 84 degrees and visibility stays good despite occasional storms.
