Ring Road in January
Not the best time
January isn't ideal for Ring Road. Consider a different month.
All Months
Summer (June through September) gives you the full Ring Road experience—all roads open, lupine flowers turning hillsides purple, and 20 hours of daylight for endless golden hour photos. July and August are peak season, meaning crowds at major waterfalls and higher accommodation prices, but also the warmest weather and best road conditions. May and September offer sweet spots—fewer tourists, decent weather, and shoulder season prices. Spring (April-May) can be unpredictable with lingering snow and muddy F-roads, but you might catch the Northern Lights if you're lucky. Winter (October-March) transforms the Ring Road into a different planet entirely. The main route stays open, but daylight shrinks to 4-5 hours in December, and weather can trap you in one place for days. But winter also brings Northern Lights, ice caves, and a stark beauty that summer visitors never see. The downside? Many highland roads close completely, and some attractions become inaccessible. If you're chasing the Aurora, plan for November through March with flexible dates. For the classic Ring Road experience with waterfalls, hiking, and long days, stick to June through September.
