Rift Valley in March
Not the best time
March isn't ideal for Rift Valley. Consider a different month.
All Months
The Rift Valley's high altitude creates a climate that defies East Africa's typical hot reputation. Daytime temperatures hover around 25°C (77°F) year-round, but nights can drop to 10°C (50°F), especially around Lake Naivasha.
June through February offers the best overall experience. The dry season from June to October brings clear skies perfect for photography and wildlife viewing. Animals concentrate around water sources, making game drives more productive. This is peak season, so expect higher prices and crowded parks.
The short rains in November and December create lush landscapes without the heavy downpours of April and May. Wildlife is still accessible, and you'll have fewer crowds. Hotel rates drop significantly during this shoulder season.
January and February mark the calving season for wildebeest in the Serengeti, which spills over into the Ngorongoro Crater. Predator action peaks as lions and cheetahs take advantage of inexperienced young animals.
Avoid March through May if possible. The long rains turn roads into mud tracks and can wash out bridges. Many lodges close for maintenance, and wildlife disperses across the landscape. But if you don't mind getting wet, this is when the valley looks most lush and green.
For flamingo viewing at Lake Nakuru and Lake Bogoria, timing depends on water levels and algae blooms. The birds follow the food, so populations fluctuate throughout the year. Check recent reports before planning a flamingo-focused trip.
