Punakaiki Pancake Rocks in August
Not the best time
August isn't ideal for Punakaiki Pancake Rocks. Consider a different month.
All Months
October through March offers the warmest weather and longest daylight hours, but also brings the biggest crowds. High tide creates the most dramatic blowhole action – check tide times at the visitor center or online before your visit. Early morning (7-9am) or late afternoon (4-6pm) provide the best lighting for photos and fewer tour buses. Winter months (June to August) see fewer visitors and dramatic storm swells, but expect rain and temperatures around 10-15°C. Spring (September to November) brings mild weather and blooming coastal vegetation. Avoid visiting during heavy rain – the limestone becomes dangerously slippery, and visibility drops to almost nothing.
