Puget Sound in September

Great time to visit

September is one of the best months to visit Puget Sound.

All Months

Summer is peak season for good reason. June through September brings the driest weather and warmest temperatures—though warm here means 70s, not 90s. Ferry schedules expand in summer with more frequent runs to the islands. But summer also means crowds. San Juan Island's Friday Harbor gets packed with day-trippers in July and August. Hotel prices spike and ferry lines stretch for hours on weekends. Early fall offers the sweet spot. September and early October deliver crisp mornings, fewer crowds, and those dramatic Pacific Northwest skies. The water stays relatively warm from summer heating. Spring can be gorgeous but unpredictable—one day brings sunshine, the next brings sideways rain. Winter has its own moody charm. Storm watching from a ferry deck beats any movie, and island towns take on a cozy, locals-only feel. Just check ferry schedules—some routes reduce service in winter months.
