Provence in August
Great time to visit
August is one of the best months to visit Provence.
All Months
July means lavender in full bloom and every hotel booked solid. The fields around Valensole turn purple, but so do tourists' faces in the 35°C heat. August is even hotter and more crowded.
May and June offer the sweet spot: warm weather, blooming flowers, and manageable crowds. Restaurant terraces reopen, markets overflow with spring vegetables, and you can actually find parking in village centers.
September through October brings harvest season. Grape picking, truffle hunting, and cooler temperatures make this many locals' favorite time. The light turns golden, perfect for photography.
Winter has its charms if you don't mind shorter days and closed restaurants. Truffle season runs November through March. Christmas markets in Aix and Avignon create festive atmospheres. Just pack layers—the mistral wind can be brutal.
