Northern Minnesota in November

Good time to visit

November is a reasonable time to visit Northern Minnesota.

All Months

June through September defines the season here. May brings black flies that'll drive you insane, while October water temperatures require dry suits for paddling. July and August see peak crowds and require BWCA permits booked months ahead. But the weather stays perfect - highs in the 70s, cool nights for sleeping. September offers the sweet spot. Bugs disappear after the first frost, fall colors peak around September 20th, and permits become easier to secure. Lake temperatures remain comfortable for swimming through mid-September. Winter transforms the region into a different planet entirely. Cross-country skiing and dog sledding replace canoeing, while the aurora borealis appears regularly from November through March. The Ely Winter Festival in February celebrates the season with ice fishing contests and sled dog races. Just know that temperatures drop to -30°F regularly.
