But mountain areas like Mavrovo stay pleasantly cool, making them ideal for hiking when the lowlands swelter. October brings autumn colors to the mountains and harvest season to the wine regions. Many restaurants close by November, especially around Lake Ohrid, so don't expect full service in winter months. Skiing season runs December through March at Mavrovo and Popova Shapka, though snow conditions vary yearly.
