Ngorongoro Crater in September

Great time to visit

September is one of the best months to visit Ngorongoro Crater.

All Months

The dry season from June through October offers the best game viewing, but it's also peak season with crowds and higher prices. Animals concentrate around water sources, making wildlife easier to spot. Roads are in better condition, and you won't get stuck in mud. But here's a secret: the short rains from November through February can be magical. Fewer tourists, green landscapes, and newborn animals everywhere. The trade-off? Afternoon thunderstorms and muddy roads that can strand vehicles. Avoid March through May—the long rains turn the crater floor into a swamp. Many camps close, and those that stay open often can't guarantee crater access. Plus, animals disperse when water is plentiful, making sightings harder. For the best of both worlds, visit in January or February. You'll catch the tail end of the calving season when wildebeest give birth, attracting predators for incredible action shots. Weather is generally clear, but pack rain gear just in case.
