Timing is everything at Lençóis Maranhenses. The lagoons only exist from May through September, when rainwater collects in the valleys between dunes. Visit too early or too late, and you'll see impressive sand dunes but miss the magical lagoons entirely. June through August represents peak season - lagoons are fullest, temperatures hover around 80°F, and you'll have the most dramatic scenery. But expect crowds and higher prices. May and September offer a sweet spot: decent water levels, fewer tourists, and better deals on accommodations in Barreirinhas. Avoid October through April completely. The dry season means empty lagoons and scorching temperatures that can hit 100°F. Plus, many tour operators reduce services during this period. The rainy season (December through May) creates muddy access roads and limited visibility - not ideal for that perfect lagoon photo you're planning.
