Lamu Island in July
Great time to visit
July is one of the best months to visit Lamu Island.
All Months
Lamu's best weather runs from June through February, with two distinct seasons worth understanding. The dry northeast monsoon (October-March) brings steady winds perfect for dhow sailing and clear skies ideal for beach days. Temperatures hover around 28°C (82°F) with low humidity.
June through September marks the southeast monsoon season. Expect more wind and occasional rain, but also fewer crowds and lower prices. The rough seas during this period make some dhow trips impossible, but the dramatic skies create incredible photo opportunities.
Avoid April and May completely — these are the long rains when heavy downpours flood the narrow streets and humidity becomes oppressive. Many hotels close during this period, and transportation becomes unreliable.
December through February represents peak season when European winter refugees flock to Lamu's beaches. Book accommodations months in advance and expect prices to double. The weather is perfect, but the island loses some of its sleepy charm.
The Lamu Cultural Festival happens in November, bringing traditional dhow races, poetry competitions, and Swahili music performances. Hotel rates spike during the festival, but the cultural immersion makes it worthwhile for first-time visitors.
