Lakes Region in December

July and August bring peak crowds and peak prices, but also the warmest lake water and longest days. Lake Winnipesaukee hits 70°F by late July — cold but swimmable. September through early October delivers the region's sweet spot. Foliage peaks around October 10th, temperatures hover in the 60s, and you can actually find parking in North Conway. Winter transforms the area into cross-country ski territory, but many lakeside businesses close from November through April. June can be buggy and rainy, but hotel rates drop 30% from peak season. Spring comes late here — don't expect warm weather before May, and even then, pack layers.
