Lake Tahoe in April
Not the best time
April isn't ideal for Lake Tahoe. Consider a different month.
All Months
July and August bring 80-degree days and crowds that make parking a nightmare. Lake temperature hits 68 degrees — actually swimmable without a wetsuit. But hotel rates double and you'll spend more time in traffic than on trails.
September is the sweet spot. Crowds thin out, temperatures stay in the 70s, and aspen trees turn gold. Lake temperature holds around 65 degrees through early October. This is when locals actually get to enjoy their own backyard.
Winter transforms Tahoe into a different destination entirely. Heavenly, Northstar, and Palisades get 300+ inches of snow annually. December through February brings the best powder but also the worst traffic — Interstate 80 turns into a parking lot every weekend. March offers longer days and softer snow.
