Lake District in March

Good time to visit

March is a reasonable time to visit Lake District.

All Months

May through September offers the most reliable weather, though 'reliable' in the Lake District means carrying waterproofs even on sunny mornings. July and August bring peak crowds and peak prices — expect queues for popular walks like Catbells and packed car parks by 9 AM. Late spring (April-May) sees daffodils carpeting the valleys and fewer tour buses clogging the roads. September and early October deliver arguably the best conditions — stable weather, autumn colors, and breathing room on the fells. Winter has its own magic if you're prepared for it. Snow transforms the landscape, but many high-level walks become serious mountaineering propositions. The weather can turn vicious without warning — temperatures drop fast above the tree line, and mist rolls in thick enough to disorient experienced walkers. Christmas through February sees many attractions close or reduce hours, but cozy pubs with log fires and empty hiking trails reward the hardy. Check weather forecasts obsessively and always pack layers, regardless of season.
