May through September defines the season, but each month brings different rewards. May means black flies but also incredible bird migration—warblers fill the forest canopy. June offers the year's best fishing as water temperatures hit the sweet spot for walleye and northern pike. July and August bring warm swimming weather and peak cottage season, which means busier lakes but also open restaurants and full-service marinas. September might be perfect—warm days, cool nights, and the start of fall colors without the summer crowds. The region essentially hibernates from October through April, with most lodges and many restaurants closing until spring thaw. Ice fishing happens, but you need serious local knowledge to do it safely.
