Lake Baikal in December

Summer (June-August) brings warmth and accessibility. July hits 70°F on good days. All transportation runs, hiking trails are clear, and you can actually swim (briefly – the water stays around 60°F even in summer). Winter (December-February) is the ice season. Temperatures drop to -40°F, but the frozen lake becomes a highway. Ice formations create natural sculptures. This is when you see Baikal's otherworldly side, but you need serious cold-weather gear. Spring and fall are tricky. Ice breaks up unpredictably in May, making boat travel dangerous. November brings storms before the freeze. These shoulder seasons offer solitude but limited access to remote areas. The ice is usually safe for walking by January, but local conditions vary. Always check with locals before venturing onto frozen sections.
