La Serena

La Serena in March

Great time to visit

March is one of the best months to visit La Serena.

All Months

La Serena shines brightest from October through March when temperatures hover around 75°F and the Pacific stays warm enough for swimming. December and January bring Chilean families on summer vacation, so beaches get crowded but the energy is infectious – think beach volleyball tournaments and weekend asados. October and November offer the sweet spot: warm days, fewer crowds, and the jacaranda trees bloom purple along Avenida Francisco de Aguirre. March extends summer into autumn with perfect weather for hiking in the Elqui Valley. Winter (June-August) isn't terrible – days reach 65°F and it rarely rains – but the ocean gets too cold for most swimmers. Here's what most guides won't tell you: La Serena's location in the Atacama Desert means incredible stargazing year-round, but winter actually offers the clearest skies. If you're coming primarily for the observatories, June through August provides the best viewing conditions.
