KwaZulu-Natal in September
Great time to visit
September is one of the best months to visit KwaZulu-Natal.
All Months
KZN's seasons split the province in half. The coast enjoys a subtropical climate with warm, humid summers and mild winters, while the Drakensberg mountains can see snow in winter and scorching heat in summer. April through September offers the sweet spot for most activities. Winter months — May through August — bring clear skies and comfortable temperatures, perfect for hiking in the Berg where daytime temperatures hover around 20°C and nights drop to near freezing above 2,000 meters. This is also prime game viewing season as animals congregate around water sources and vegetation thins out. The coast remains pleasant in winter with average temperatures around 23°C, though ocean temperatures drop to 19°C — still swimmable but you'll want a wetsuit for extended beach time. Summer — November through March — brings heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms. Temperatures along the coast hit 30°C with humidity that makes it feel hotter, while the Drakensberg can reach 35°C in the valleys. But summer has its advantages: this is when the mountains turn emerald green, waterfalls flow at full strength, and wildflowers bloom across the highland grasslands. It's also turtle nesting season along the coast from October to March. The shoulder seasons — April and September-October — offer the best of both worlds: fewer crowds, good weather, and lower accommodation prices. Just avoid the December-January school holidays when South African families flood the coast and accommodation prices double.
