Kinabalu National Park in January

Good time to visit

January is a reasonable time to visit Kinabalu National Park.

All Months

March through August offers the driest weather, but 'dry' is relative in Borneo - expect afternoon showers year-round. April and May are ideal, with clearer summit views and fewer crowds than peak July-August. The northeast monsoon from October to February brings heavy rain that can make trails dangerous and summit views non-existent. Here's what most guides won't tell you: February and March can actually be great for wildlife viewing at lower elevations, as animals are more active after the rains. But if you're dead set on the summit, stick to the drier months. Weekend climbs book up fastest with domestic tourists, so consider midweek departures. Temperature at the base stays around 20-25°C year-round, dropping to 5-10°C at Laban Rata and near freezing at the summit.
