Kelabit Highlands in October
Good time to visit
October is a reasonable time to visit Kelabit Highlands.
All Months
March through September offers the driest conditions for trekking between villages. Trails stay muddy year-round, but this period sees fewer river crossings and clearer mountain views. Temperatures hover around 20-25°C during the day, dropping to 15°C at night.
Avoid October through February if possible. Northeast monsoons dump heavy rain almost daily, turning trails into slippery nightmares. Rivers rise quickly, sometimes cutting off communities for days. Flight cancellations become routine.
But here's the thing - even dry season means afternoon showers. Pack waterproof gear regardless of when you visit. The highlands create their own weather patterns, and clouds roll in fast.
For cultural experiences, time visits around harvest season in July-August. Communities celebrate with traditional dances and plenty of tuak. Rice harvesting is labor-intensive, and visitors often get invited to help - it's backbreaking work but genuine cultural exchange.
