Kazbegi in September
Great time to visit
September is one of the best months to visit Kazbegi.
All Months
May through September offers the most reliable weather, but each month brings trade-offs. May means wildflowers in lower valleys but snow still blocking high passes. June and July deliver the warmest temperatures — perfect for camping but also peak tourist season for the few tourists who make it here.
August and September might be ideal. Days stay warm enough for high-altitude hiking, nights are crisp but not brutal, and the crowds thin out after Georgian families return to school and work. September also brings harvest season — a good time to sample local produce and homemade wine.
Winter transforms Kazbegi into a different place entirely. Snow closes most hiking routes above 2,000 meters, but the landscape becomes stark and beautiful. A few guesthouses stay open, heating their rooms with wood stoves. The Gergeti church, accessible by snowshoe or cross-country ski, looks especially dramatic against winter skies.
Spring arrives late and leaves early. March and April can still bring heavy snow, while October often sees the first serious storms. But shoulder seasons offer solitude — you might have entire valleys to yourself.
