Great time to visit

January is one of the best months to visit Kandy Region.

All Months

Kandy's elevation creates its own weather rules that ignore Sri Lanka's typical monsoon patterns. December through April delivers the region's driest months, with clear skies perfect for temple visits and hill country drives. Temperatures hover around 24°C during the day, dropping to a comfortable 18°C at night. January brings the Perahera season's buildup, when temple drummers practice nightly and the city buzzes with anticipation. But here's the catch — accommodation prices double, and popular restaurants book solid. If you can handle crowds, the energy is infectious. April marks the transition period before the southwest monsoon arrives in May. You'll get fewer tourists, normal prices, and occasional afternoon showers that clear the air. The hill country looks its greenest during these months, with tea plants practically glowing against misty mountainsides. Avoid October and November when the northeast monsoon dumps serious rain on the region. Roads become treacherous, temple visits turn soggy, and that famous hill country scenery disappears behind thick clouds. Some tea estates close their visitor centers entirely during heavy rain periods.
