Japanese Alps in February
Great time to visit
February is one of the best months to visit Japanese Alps.
All Months
Summer hiking season runs from July through September, when snow melts from most trails and wildflowers carpet the alpine meadows. August brings the most reliable weather but also the biggest crowds on popular trails like those around Kamikochi. Early fall delivers spectacular autumn colors, with maple leaves turning brilliant reds and golds against the snow-dusted peaks — late September to mid-October is peak foliage season. Winter transforms the region into a completely different destination. December through February offers world-class powder skiing in Hakuba and other resorts, plus the magical experience of soaking in outdoor hot springs while snow falls around you. Spring arrives late in the mountains, with some high-altitude areas remaining snow-covered into May. The shoulder seasons can be tricky — late fall brings unpredictable weather, and early spring means muddy trails and limited access to higher elevations.
