Japanese Alps in June

Great time to visit

June is one of the best months to visit Japanese Alps.

All Months

Summer hiking season runs from July through September, when mountain huts open and trails clear of snow. August brings crowds but also the best weather for multi-day treks. Early September offers fewer people and stunning autumn colors starting at higher elevations. Winter transforms the region into a snow sports paradise from December through February. Powder skiing at resorts like Hakuba rivals anywhere in Japan, while onsen soaking becomes even more magical surrounded by snow. Spring arrives late here — Kamikochi doesn't open until late April, and snow lingers on high peaks well into June. But late spring brings cherry blossoms to lower elevations and fewer crowds. Avoid Golden Week in early May and Obon in mid-August unless you enjoy sharing trails with half of Tokyo. Weather changes fast in the mountains, so pack layers regardless of season.
