Inside Passage in September

Great time to visit

September is one of the best months to visit Inside Passage.

All Months

May through September defines Inside Passage cruise season, but timing matters more than you think. May offers the best deals and fewer crowds, but expect rain and some snow at higher elevations. June brings wildflowers and longer daylight—nearly 19 hours in Juneau—but also peak mosquito season. July and August deliver the warmest weather and busiest ports. September surprises most people: fewer crowds, northern lights possibilities, and fall colors, but some shore excursions shut down after Labor Day. Glacier Bay requires advance permits that limit daily ship visits, so book early for July and August sailings. Weather changes fast here—pack layers even in summer. Temperatures rarely exceed 70°F, and rain happens year-round. The protected waters mean less seasickness than open ocean cruising, but bring motion sickness remedies for the Gulf of Alaska portions.
