September offers the best of both worlds — summer weather with thinner crowds and cheaper hotels. The closing parties in late September and early October are legendary. Winter sees most clubs shut down, but you'll have the UNESCO sites to yourself and hotel rates drop by 70%. Just pack layers — Mediterranean winters can be surprisingly chilly.
